Monetize your work on Whatoon

Whatoon has two active revenue levers today: keys (readers unlock your chapters) and tips (readers send you extra keys). The first chapter is always free. Here's a tour of what works right now.

💡 The model

Free reading, paid support

Free reading, paid support

Every work's first chapter is free. For the rest, readers have two options: spend keys to unlock immediately, or follow your feed and wait if they'd rather not pay. You earn a share of the keys spent on your chapters.

  • You choose whether a chapter is gated (key cost) or fully free.
  • Whatoon doesn't touch your rights — you can pull your work anytime.
  • No editorial gatekeeping, no publishing quota.

🔑 Keys

How keys work

How keys work

Keys are Whatoon's internal currency. Readers buy them to unlock your chapters or tip you, and you accumulate the resulting yellow keys on your creator account. The exact value of each key on the buy side vs cashout side, the commission, SEPA fees and taxes are all detailed in the cashout guide — no point repeating the table here.

  • Yellow keys (from reader purchases or tips) are cashable — see the cashout guide for the math.
  • Green keys (gifted by Whatoon — daily bonus, achievements, signup) are NOT cashable — they cover free AI quotas.
  • You see your balance and history in real time at /tokens.

❤️ Tips

Tips & likes on comments

Tips & likes on comments

On your profile page, readers can tip you in keys directly — voluntary support on top of unlocks. On chapter comments, the like button bumps good comments up and signals engagement to other readers.

🎁 First chapter

The biggest lever — first-chapter freebie

The biggest lever — first-chapter freebie

Every work's first chapter is always free. It's your storefront. Put your best hook there: cliffhanger, striking opener, a mystery that forces continuation. The better chapter 1, the more readers click chapter 2.

  • End on a cliffhanger or strong tease.
  • Polish the last page — that's what readers remember before the paywall.
  • Optimize title + cover (the scroll stops on the cover, not the title).

📈 Best practices

Publishing hygiene

Publishing hygiene

Whatoon is a young platform — we don't have the data yet to give benchmarks. Here are the basics that work on any serialized fiction platform.

  • Steady > burst: 1 chapter / week for 3 months beats dumping 10 then disappearing.
  • Cover + first chapter: that decides whether someone reads or scrolls.
  • Reply to your early comments — a reader who feels seen comes back.

💸 Cashout

Convert keys to euros

When you want to convert your yellow keys to a SEPA payout, we have a full guide on the calculation, commission, Stripe fees and taxes. Read it before your first cashout.
